Sir Hardy Amies (17 July, 1909 – 5 March, 2003) was born Maida Vale, West London.  He was educated in Essex and travelled in Europe after leaving school, before gaining employment in the fashion industry.  He was the Queen’s dress designer for most of the latter half of the Twentieth Century, but designed for both men an women, and built a successful company in Savile Row.
